Chairmans Report for An introduction to Showing & Working your Golden Retriever 2023

On Sunday 1st October the club held a full program of events at Oake Village Hall, near Taunton.

Aimed at beginners, we wanted to cover not only grooming and handling your dog for the show ring,

but also a help on how to enter a show, what happens on the day all the things you need to know

about showing your dog.

In the morning we held a 2-hour session with our expert trainer Christine Collins on Gundog training

how to get started and basic tips on obedience training for working your dog, everyone seemed to

really enjoy this event. We had other breeds joining in on the day. It was a very helpful and

informative morning and I think all who took part gained a good insight into working their dog.

During the day we ran a Good Citizen Bronze test for anyone wanting to take part, this too proved

very popular and quite a number passed with flying colours. Thank you to Angela White for running

this event.

We had a short break for lunch, followed by an excellent trimming demonstration by Jenny Clarke,

who was very happy to answer any questions and give advice.

Moving on from here Meaylee Lewis gave a Master class into how to handle and show your dog to its

best advantage, afterwards the attendees had a one to one with her on how best to show your dog.

At the end of the day we showed a short Power Point program on the do's and don’ts of the show

world, from entry forms to classes to enter, to how to behave in the show ring. It was a very useful

tool for newcomers to the world of dog showing.

Thank you to all who supported our event and I hope this has been a great help to many, we hope to

hold another similar event next year, also thank you to the committee members who helped on the

day.
