SWGRC  Code Of Ethics

All members of the (South Western Golden Retriever Club) undertake to abide by the Kennel Club  general Code of Ethics.

Club members

1) Will properly house, feed, water and exercise all dogs under their care and arrange for appropriate veterinary attention if and when required.

2) Will agree without reservation that any veterinary surgeon performing an operation on any of their dogs which alters the natural conformation of the animal, may report such operation to the Kennel Club.

3) Will agree that no healthy puppy will be culled. Puppies which may not conform to the Breed Standard should be placed in suitable homes.

4) Will abide by all aspects of the Animal Welfare Act.

5) Will not create demand for, nor supply, puppies that have been docked illegally.

6) Will agree not to breed from a dog or bitch which could be in any way harmful to the dog or to the breed.

7) Will not allow any of their dogs to roam at large or to cause a nuisance to neighbours or those carrying out official duties.

8) Will ensure that their dogs wear properly tagged collars and will be kept leashed or under effective control when away from home.

9) Will clean up after their dogs in public places or anywhere their dogs are being exhibited.

10) Will only sell dogs where there is a reasonable expectation of a happy and healthy life and will help with the re-homing of a dog if the initial circumstances change.

11) Will supply written details of all dietary requirements and give guidance concerning responsible ownership when placing dogs in a new home.

12) Will ensure that all relevant Kennel Club documents are provided to the new owner when selling or transferring a dog, and will agree, in writing, to forward any relevant documents at the earliest opportunity, if not immediately available.

13) Will not sell any dog to commercial dog wholesalers, retail pet dealers or directly or indirectly allow dogs to be given as a prize or donation in a competition of any kind. Will not sell by sale or auction Kennel Club registration certificates as stand alone items (not accompanying a dog).

14) Will not knowingly misrepresent the characteristics of the breed nor falsely advertise dogs nor mislead any person regarding the health or quality of a dog.

Breach of these provisions may result in expulsion from club membership, and/or disciplinary action by the Kennel Club and/or reporting to the relevant authorities for legal action, as appropriate.

In keeping with the  dedication to further the betterment of the breed, I will endeavour to maintain the following practices:-

1.   That good temperament being the prime importance in the Golden Retriever, breeding
       from animals of a nervous disposition or bad temperament be discouraged, however  
       good their other qualities.

2.    To maintain the best possible standards of health and environment for my dogs and not
        keeping more than I can properly care and maintain.

3.   That I will bear in mind the main hereditary defects in the Golden Retriever and before
       breeding from any animal will avail myself of the KC/BVA scheme (or any other
       scheme accepted in the U.K.)  for the control of Hip Dysplasia and Hereditary Eye        
       abnormalities, or any other scheme recognized and accepted by the Kennel Club
       or equivalent thereof in any other country and only breed within the limits of normality
       for the breed.  

4     To keep and pass onto buyers of puppies accurate records of pedigree, health and
        registration , and to advise on rearing.

5      As owners of stud dogs who have an equal responsibility for the future of the advise
        honestly owners of proposed visiting bitches as to the suitability of the stud dog with
        respect to the bloodlines involved in the proposed matings and ensure that all bitches
        mated comply with the requirements of clause 3 above.

6.     That I, when wishing to breed from a bitch assess vigorously the need to breed from a
         particular animal, conscious always that I have the resources, both financial and
         practical  to care for a litter, especially if it is large for longer than eight weeks, if

7.    That I review the ability of selling the resulting puppies to good permanent homes
8.    where they are well housed, fed, and exercised (and loved), and ensure the reasons for wanting a Golden Retriever are sound.

8.       To refuse to sell to unethical dealers or any buyers where I have reason to believe the    dog will not be properly cared for.
9.       To sell only puppies and adult dogs of sound and good temperament.

10.     I, as a breeder will act in a responsible manner and afford as much help and guidance  
          is necessary, regarding diet, exercise, health care, play and rest, to purchasers of my     stock as long as it is required.

11.     That bitches are only bred from when physically and mentally mature and the  
           numbers of litters born are within generally accepted and reasonable  limits  
           and that bitches are not bred from on consecutive seasons, without justifiable   
 Finally, that I would be prepared to replace or refund the price of a puppy
  or help with the re-housing  should it become necessary.
